Exercise for obese people should be monitored by a health professional to minimize the risk of injury. Low-impact or no impact exercises are preferred to decrease injuries to knees, hips, low-back and ankles. Wrap your knee and ankle joints to give a little extra support and invest in a good pair of shoes with a good arch support and plenty of cushioning.
After your doctor gives you the ok, begin each day with 10-15 minutes on a stationary bike. a recumbent bike might be better for you because they usually have a more comfortable seat and is considered non-impact to protect those joints. If, your first time, you can only ride for five minutes then so be it. Work up to where you need to be for an effective workout.
Elliptical trainers are another good way to go if you want low-impact exercise. Ellipticals are easy on the joints and a great way to get good cardio. Start slow though, I know someone who just jumped on one one day and while she only could stand to do one minute, she couldn’t hardly walk for the next three days. Make sure any settings are correct for your level of ability.
Treadmills are another great way to get some exercise for obese people. Also, considered low-impact because of the cushioning they offer they can and do protect your joints very well. We have all been told that walking is the best way to lose weight and if it is comfortable walking then you will probably stick with it. So, start walking on a treadmill either at home or in the gym before venturing outdoors to walk on the street or a paved or gravel path.
Another piece of equipment that you can use that you may not even have considered yet is the exercise ball. Did you know that just sitting on an exercise ball will begin to strengthen your core muscles? Go buy one, bring it home and blow it up, they usually come with a pump. Then that night while you are watching the TV just sit on it for 30 minutes to an hour. You will feel your legs working to keep your balance. In no time you will be following the exercise plan that also comes with the ball. You can get an awesome workout on one of those babies. All non- or low-impact.
Too many people think that if they are obese they are stuck in that rut for the rest of their lives, not true! It is never too late to get fit and lose weight. Do it for your kids, do it for your spouse, but most of all do it for yourself. You will feel so much better and be able to do so much more like, playing dodge ball with your kids on the front lawn or having more frequent intimate nights with your spouse. Exercise for obese people can help you reap the rewards of good health and fitness.
